Cult of the Lamb review

Cult of the Lamb is an innovative roguelike video game developed by indie developer Massive Monster and published by Devolver Digital. This game follows a possessed lamb who is saved from death by a god-like stranger called "The One Who Waits" and must build a loyal following in its name to repay the debt.

On August 11, 2022, the game made its debut across a wide range of platforms including macOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Now, let's dive into the rich and engaging aspects of this game's design and play experience.

Explore Randomly Generated Worlds to Grow Your Cult

The game is centered around a possessed lamb who is tasked with forming a cult to appease the ominous deity who saved the player character's life. The player must launch roguelike-style crusades and venture out into the game's five regions to defeat enemies and grow their following.

In this dynamically generated world, infused with elements of roguelike gameplay, players will find themselves amidst a vast landscape ripe with resources to harvest, a plethora of perks and weapons to acquire, and a variety of enemies including rival cultists and skeptics to confront. Additionally, various animals can be discovered and converted to join the player's cult. The player is tasked with cult management within their village, where followers can be allocated specific roles such as resource collection, construction, worship, and ritual execution. Followers may also be called upon to support the player in combat or, in some instances, be offered as sacrifices. These decisions directly influence the player's capabilities and the overall health and progression of the cult.

Though Cult of the Lamb offers a captivating and engaging gaming experience, there are some weaknesses in the game. For instance, the graphics are not up to the mark, and the game is a bit too difficult for some players. In addition, the controls are somewhat clunky and can be a bit confusing at times.

Impressions of Cult of the Lamb Game

Upon its release, Cult of the Lamb garnered favorable critiques, particularly for its engaging gameplay and substantial replayability. At the 19th British Academy Games Awards, it was a contender for three awards, including the prestigious Best Game category. Although certain elements were seen as less compelling, the game remains a standout title, offering a delightful experience for enthusiasts of the roguelike genre.
