In a move that's sure to spark conversations, Google has announced that it's bringing ads to the AI-generated summaries in its search results. The tech giant revealed on Tuesday that it will soon start testing this feature with users in the US, integrating search and shopping ads directly within AI Overviews.
For instance, if you ask Google, "how do I get wrinkles out of clothes?” the AI-generated response will be followed by a “Sponsored” section. This new addition will include a carousel of products like wrinkle sprays available from retailers such as Walmart and Instacart.
Google assures users that these ads will only appear when they are relevant to both the user’s query and the information provided by the AI. Advertisers who already run certain campaigns with Google will automatically be eligible to have their ads displayed in these new AI Overviews.
This development raises questions about the balance between information and commercialization. While Google aims to provide quick and concise summaries through its AI, introducing ads may clutter the user experience. The company notes that it will continue to test and refine these formats, seeking feedback from both advertisers and the broader industry.
The exact timeline for when these tests will begin remains unclear. However, this shift could fundamentally change how we interact with search results. As Google navigates this new terrain, users and advertisers alike will have to adapt to a search landscape where AI and advertising intersect more than ever before.
